Un-Hinged

What are the minimum number of hinges traditionally needed for a door to operate well? . . . Two. On a two hinged door, which is the most important one? . . . The top one. Picture this, if you have a door with a top hinge only, the door will be tough to open and move, but it will be functional. If you have a door with only one hinge near the bottom, the door will likely rip right off as soon as it is swung past the door jamb.

Not long ago, a brother in Christ shared that he and his wife were wrestling with a choice that their child had made to pursue a sinful life. They were having a particularly difficult time making a decision to attend an event that celebrated this sinful decision. My brother in Christ stated, "We ended up deciding to obey the command to 'love your neighbor as yourself' and attend the event". Jesus said in Matthew 22 that the first and greatest command is "to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength", and the second (meaning lesser in importance) is "to love your neighbor as yourself". He said that all the law and prophets hang (hinge) on these two commands. And He gave the hierarchy of loving God with everything you have and then your neighbor as yourself-not as an "either or" option.

Dishonoring God to not hurt someone's feelings, or to avoid alienating them is breaking both of these commands. It rips the door right off the bottom hinge. Why? Because honoring God's commands ultimately shows true love for our neighbors in that we are showing the sin they choose leads only to death when God would have them live.

-Chad Perron, CPM Ministry

Do Your Friends Know What You Need?

I had an experience not too long ago where a friend had the kindness to not hold back what my actions displayed. I had been impatient and short in my statements while preparing for an event. I later said to this friend, "I'm sorry, I get a little 'emphatic' sometimes." I was hoping to cite, "Yeah, I don't like how I do this, but I realize that I do." This friend's response was to go deeper and point out just exactly how it makes someone feel to hear comments that are quick and disrespectful, and he did it while still offering forgiveness for it. It truly broke my heart-now I was REALLY sorry. I needed to hear just how unloving my demeanor and language can be. Thank you Lord for the wounds of a friend! I also realized from this that I need to ask my friends to be very clear and direct with me so that they know how I respond best to being called out for my sin. I know that not everyone needs the same approach- some need a gentle arm around the shoulder, and others need the 2x4 of truth in the face. So my question is this, do your friends know what you need?

-Chad Perron, CPM Ministry

Making Waves

We have recently seen the destructive power of water and waves. It's frightening to see what this precious resource can do under the manipulation of natural occurrences. I thought about how easy it is to make waves: an infant taking a bath inadvertently makes waves by awkward flailings, a pebble dropped into a pond creates ripples that extent far beyond its point of impact. But how difficult is it to stop those waves and make water calm? In Mark 4:39 Jesus calmed a storm which was so fierce that his disciples, seasoned fishermen, were afraid that they were going to die in it. They were in awe of how the wind AND WAVES obeyed His voice. What we are unable to control with all human thought and effort, the Creator of the Universe, Jesus Christ, tames with his voice. How easily we make waves and turmoil in our lives-sometimes without even being intentional about it. He is able to calm any storm raging within us, but He allows us to choose. Will you listen to His voice?

-Chad Perron, CPM Ministry

Fear!

Fear! The last year for me has been one of fear and anxiety. With many things happening in our lives (work, family, relationships, financial stress), there is a lot to create anxiety in many of us. I’m certainly no exception. Not only do I feel my own anxiety, but I also seem to pick up and carry others’ anxieties as well. I believe I have read every verse in the Bible about fear and anxiety. “Be anxious for nothing …”, “Fear not, …”, etc…but now if someone would only tell my physical body that! My mind knows, but my physical body seems to have a life of its own. For instance, I can wake up in the middle of the night with not a thought or worry yet feel like I am being zapped by a pulsating electric fence. I’ve had friends, my husband, and have, myself, prayed for a healing from the physical and emotional effects of anxiety. And I know God will, I have no doubt, but I do sometimes feel like asking, “WHEN GOD WHEN?” I know He is using this issue to help others and myself. I’m grateful that I know what others mean when they say they feel like they are going to actually die from a panic attack (increased heart rate, hyper-ventilating, uncontrollable shaking, chest pains, etc). With that being said, I’m ready to be done with it. But here is the thing..the Bible never tells us not to FEEL fear, it says, do not fear. Many courageous people who have done heroic things, I’m sure, would testify that they were scared and fearful when they did what they felt they were called to do. They didn’t run from the thing that was in front of them. Well good news-I AIN’T RUNNING from my fear, and neither are a lot of those other people who go about their lives feeling anxious. I’m choosing to stand in Christ, He is my rock and my salvation. As long as we are moving forward and doing what God has asked us to do we are under no condemnation for feeling fear. So! Do it Afraid-

-Vanessa Perron, CPM Ministry

Remaining Changed

Finish this statement with me, "Set it, and . . . .” Ron Popeil summarized how we expect to see things operate in our modern world. Just plug it in, turn it on, and let it do the work. I find myself getting frustrated when something isn't working the way I expected, or exactly the way the manual said it would. I'm finding as time goes on that I have to learn the tools and equipment I purchase and develop an understanding of their peculiarities. An example of this is a humidifier that we own. We were going through filters pretty regularly, and they aren’t cheap. Eventually, we began turning the filter over once in a while so that the wicking end could get a break and soak for a while. Now we do this twice a day. Instead of changing a filter every three weeks, it lasts for several months. Yes, this story is heading toward an analogy about God and our relationship with Him. At some point, when the Holy Spirit calls you, you will have responded with repentance and turning to God through Jesus Christ, or by saying no to Him. A trap we can fall into if we have said, “Yes, I believe, please forgive and save me.” is that this is the end of what we need to do rather than the beginning. In order to be an effectively changed being in Christ, it is necessary to move forward as such with the learning and growing that will make us shine for His glory.

Chad Perron –CPM Ministry
